GEO-FIA (a play on the Arabic word for groundwater, jawfiya) is an integrated directory of Iraq’s hydrogeological resources that provides a common platform to view, assess, develop and share data. GEO-FIA was developed in partnership with the Government of Iraq as part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable groundwater management in Iraq. GEO-FIA is funded by the European Union within the UNESCO project, “An Advanced Hydrogeological Survey for Sustainable Groundwater Development in Iraq.” Launched in 2010, the project is an initiative to promote an integrated, data-driven approach to managing Iraq’s groundwater resources by digitizing and integrating Iraq’s hydrogeological knowledge. It includes nearly 30,000 files, across approximately 1,800 folders, and represents one of the largest central databases for hydrogeology in Iraq. GEO-FIA brings together all known available data across a wide set of fields in Iraq, including hydrology, geology, geophysics, agriculture, and climate.
